How To Care For Your New Asphalt Driveway
When it comes to driveway care tips, Mom always knows best! Here are some tips on how to care for your new driveway:
- "Time out. Better cool it, mister!" Like mom's freshly baked apple pie, your driveway needs time to cool down before you can enjoy it. Stay off the newly paved surface for 24 hours.
- "If I have to turn this car around..." Avoid turning the wheels on the paved area while the vehicle is parked, especially on extremely hot days. The driveway will continue to oxidize.
- "Don't run with scissors or sharp objects." Never set sharp objects like bike stands, lawn chairs, jacks stands, or boat trailer hitches on the paved area. Heavy point loads can penetrate asphalt. Place a board under the jack to avoid asphalt penetration.
- "Mow the lawn." Gas and oil will break down asphalt. Avoid filling gas powered equipment or changing oil on the paved area. If a spill does occur, use a product such as OIL-DRI, dry sand, or kitty litter to soak up the spill. This should be down as quickly as possible to avoid damage to the driveway.
- "No, we cannot get a monster truck." Avoid driving heavy vehicles or trailers off the edges of the driveway. This can cause cracking along the edge of the asphalt. If you must drive over the edges, use boards to bridge the edge to avoid damage. Place topsoil or gravel against the edge of the asphalt as soon as possible.
- "Go shovel the driveway." If you're looking for a little added protection and you also like the look of a sealed driveway, we suggesting waiting 3-12 months after installation. The delay allows more time for the asphalt to oxidize. The sealer will adhere better to oxidized asphalt. The dark black will help absorb sunlight in the winter and help protect the underlying asphalt from water and oil, and yes, you will still have to shovel your driveway.
