Solution: Restoring soil, seed, and mulch after the sidewalks were finished.

Traverse City is aiming to create a safer and more walkable city with yearly sidewalk repairs through the Sidewalk Replacement and the Sidewalk Gap Infill programs. In addition to these programs, the city of Traverse City also received grants to install sidewalks in areas lacking walkability, through the Safe Routes to School program. Norte, a youth-focused nonprofit in Traverse City, helped advocate for the Safe Routes program to gain the funding and they continuously encourage walking and biking for a healthier and happier community.

While sidewalk installation will continue in 2018 as an on-going project in Traverse City, during the 2017 season Team Elmer’s poured one mile of sidewalk in Traverse City – 85% new sidewalk and 15% repairs to old sidewalks.

To complete the project, Team Elmer’s removed 692 square feet of existing pavement to make way for the new portions of sidewalk. Team Elmer’s poured 66,377 square feet of concrete for sidewalk and ramp replacement. On top of that, Team Elmer’s helped with 46 tons of HMA hand patching.

Along with providing the concrete for the sidewalks, Team Elmer’s also poured the concrete for 503 feet of curb and gutter replacement and helped install a retaining wall.
Team Elmer’s restored slopes, removed tree roots, and also replaced four inches of topsoil and mulch. Team Elmer’s seeded the new soil as well, all to ensure the sidewalks and landscape were brought back to their original state and to keep the new sidewalks in good shape.
