Challenge: Working around a flowing river, water table, and planning to get materials in place. Building a timber-span bridge.
Solution: Moving as much dirt as possible to the correct side of the river before removing the road over the culvert.
Team Elmer's has put the finishing touches on the Honor-based Reynolds Road Bridge, which spans 72 feet across the Platte River. The project, which was made possible through generous grants from the Grand Traverse Band of Chippewa and Ottawa Indians, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Conservation Resource Alliance, will help to eliminate washouts into the Platte River. The site was selected via a Benzie Conservation District survey that highlighted areas in need of improvement throughout the county.

Prior to removing the road over the culvert, Team Elmer's moved a whopping 7,000 cubic yards of dirt from one riverbank to the next. We were then able to install piles and build the timber bridge...with very little room to work, and without disrupting the river or its wildlife habitat!
“Elmer’s provided quality work, on time and on budget,” said Patrick Middleton, the contract engineer for the bridge."
“Professionalism and a strong desire to deliver a quality product were evident with every Elmer’s employee that contributed to this project.”
Thanks to lots of careful planning, Team Elmer's -- and Benzie County travelers -- have crossed the bridge to the other side. And boy is the grass greener!
