| Spring thaw leaves roads vulnerable to damageThe change from winter to spring brings more than just rising temperatures to the area. Frost Laws, or weight restrictions for commercial vehicles, are imposed to protect the integrity of the non Class A roads during the transition. The snow may be gone on the roads, but underneath the surface, the roadbeds thaw much more slowly, leaving a potential moisture trap between thawed surface and frozen sub-grades, posing the threat of damaging the roads if vehicles with heavy loads drive over them during that time. However, it's not necessary for Frost Laws to be imposed on all roads. Some roads, such as Class A roads, were built with a thicker and stronger base, with the ability to withstand the thawing period, allowing heavy loads to be hauled all year round. Reducing the weight and speed limits for larger commercial vehicles on non Class A roads during the spring thaw is essential to avoiding thousands of dollars of costly damages to the roads.
