Securing Lower Shore Dr • Roundabout Etiquette

Roundabout Etiquette: Who has the right of way?

A roundabout is a circular intersection design increasingly used by MDOT. When properly selected and designed, roundabouts can handle high volumes of traffic and may cost less than a traditional signalized intersection.

But how do you use one? Follow these guidelines to safely navigate a roundabout:

  • Choose your lane before entering
  • Yield to traffic already in the roundabout
  • Once there is an adequate gap in traffic, enter the roundabout
  • Never stop or change lanes while in the roundabout
  • Allow large vehicles extra space to navigate the roundabout
  • Never drive next to or attempt to pass large vehicles
  • Yield to pedestrians in the crosswalks
  • Use signs and pavement markings to help guide you.

Securing Lower Shore Drive!

Sandwiched between Lake Michigan and the Tunnel of Trees scenic drive, Lower Shore Drive is certainly a beautiful area. However, the road runs along a steep embankment and was in danger of washing out and possibly causing harm to the residents below.

The solution to the erosion problem was to install a 400-foot soldier pile wood lagging wall. The wood retaining wall and grouted tie-backs provided the additional support needed to stabalize the hillside of the roadway.

Team Elmer's Update - Episode 29: Lower Shore Drive

The challenge of installing the new retaining wall was nothing in comparison to the challenge of keeping cyclists out of the road closure. But considering how beautiful of an area it is, who can blame them!
