How to Save on Energy Costs + Trucks + A Joke or Two

We keep on truckin'

Team Elmer's is excited to announce that we are acquiring some new staff and resources, as a result of our recent purchase of Mohawk Transport from Morley, Mich.

Mohawk Transport, a family-owned trucking business, mainly hauls lime, chip seal stone, aggregates, gravel, sand and stone for agricultural, commercial and contractor clients. Its trucks and drivers will be essential to our plans for expansion and growth, which include longer-haul trucking jobs, and statewide destinations.

"In these challenging times, we're fortunate to be able to forge partnerships like this one. We're bringing on a great group of people, customers, equipment, and services," says Team Elmer's Co-Owner and Company President Troy Broad of the acquisition.

Current owner James Carey and two Mohawk drivers will join Team Elmer’s. In his new role as Transportation Services Manager, Carey will oversee the majority of Team Elmer’s Michigan operations, including pricing and overall logistics. The new drivers will be stationed in Big Rapids and will service the Northern Lower Michigan region—from Alma to the Mackinac Bridge and coast to Michigan coast.

“I’m really excited about this opportunity,” said Carey. “I feel lucky to have the opportunity to be part of a team. It’s going to be an experience!”

It's getting cold, but geothermal is heating up

A major source of energy is right under your feet.

Your own backyard has the potential to be your source for heating and cooling comfort. Geothermal energy moves heat energy to and from the earth to heat and cool your indoor environment. You can get safe, reliable, energy efficient heating and cooling from one piece of equipment. Compared to ordinary systems, geothermal technology can save you 30% to 60% on your monthly energy bills. And according to Traverse City's GeoFurnace, geothermal is the safest, cleanest, most reliable space conditioning system you can buy.

Team Elmer's recently provided drilling services for the installation of five individual loops for a geothermal heating and cooling system at a residence on Elk Lake. The homeowner was undergoing a remodel and chose to employ the technology to save on utility bills.

To install, we utilized a horizontal directional bore, which is a relatively new procedure for installing geothermal loop systems. With these specialized machines, loop piping for geothermal systems can be inserted into a yard beneath existing utilities and other obstacles without disturbing the surface of the ground. Only a confined area around the machine must be excavated to connect the loop circuits after they’re installed.

In this case, rather than disrupt the homeowner's entire yard with a large excavation, the lines were installed in a very tight space along the side of the house and then under the driveway. The lines were installed approximately 10 feet apart and 12 to 15 feet deep. Once the lines were in place, GeoFurnace completed the installation by building a header system and ran the plumbing to the house.

"It was great working with John," said GeoFurnace Project Manager Jason Sheets. "Team Elmer’s was timely in their responses and worked well with our customer. It was a difficult project, but we were all up for the challenge."

With winter coming and heating costs on the rise, geothermal could be a superb option for you. Click here to discover how much you might save.
