Around the State / Sinkhole on M-72 / US-31 Phase II Coming Soon

Caution: Sinkhole Ahead!

On Wednesday, July 29th the Grand Traverse County Road Commission received word, via Team Elmer's driver John Pickard, of a potential public safety hazard on M-72 West near Zimmerman Landscaping. As it turns out, a sinkhole had developed underneath the asphalt surface, due to an existing underground infrastructure collapse.

Team Elmer's dispatched a Vac Truck at the request of the GT County Road Commision Superintendent, Toby Javin, to help repair the area. After investigating the cause of the sinkhole, Javin explains that it appears an old culvert bulkhead had failed slightly, allowing the sub-base to begin settling down, which eventually led to a fail-point at the asphalt surface.

Our concrete mixers were also dispatched to fill the void and patch the sinkhole, making the area safe for motorists once again.

If you discover a sinkhole or other road hazard developing, you can reach the Grand Traverse County Road Commission by email via gtcrc.org, or by phone at 231-922-4848.

A Trip Around the State!

Are you ready for a road trip? We have crews working all around the state, laying asphalt, digging in the dirt, pouring concrete, and lifting heavy objects through the air!

Let's take a look at our itinerary for this trip around the state, which includes a stop in Mid Michigan at the Superior Vault Company. The Jayden Lamb Memorial Foundation mixer is delivering their daily load of fresh concrete for burial vaults.

Next stop is the beautful marinas of Traverse City, which have experienced damages from the harsh winter. The ice has forced the dock pilings up and Team Elmer's Piers & Piles crew is driving them back into position.

And last we find ourselves in the Upper Peninsula in Sault Ste Marie, where our Hillman-based excavation crew is in the process of reconstructing Ashmun Street. The quarter mile long project is scheduled to run roughly 3 months, to be completed by mid-October.

Team Elmer's Update - Episode 5: Around the State

Whether it’s a routine concrete pour in Mid-Michigan, or reconstructing an old and worn down road in the U.P, or anything in between, you can bet there’s an Elmer’s team member working hard to get the job done right!

US-31 Phase II Coming Soon!

It was only two months ago when Team Elmer's wrapped work on the Miracle Mile, Phase I of the US-31 reconstruction. And now it's time for Phase II, the mill & fill from Holiday Road to the Grand Traverse Resort (Brackett Rd).

Phase II will have similar traffic patterns as the Miracle Mile, with multiple lane shifts and potentially long delays. Phase I traffic delays ranged from 5 to 25 mintues or more depending on traffic volume and time of day. One lane will be kept open in each direction throughout the entire project. While traveling this route, please plan ahead and allow yourself extra time to get to your destination.

The 3.5 mile resurfacing of US-31 will begin after Labor Day and if all goes well will be completed in 5 weeks. Thank you for your patience!
