A Michigan Summer: Our Highlights

Community Adopts "Pay it Forward" Method in Wake of Elmer's Project

For years, Traverse City's Holiday Road was in such dreadful condition that residents of the nearby Holiday Hills neighborhoods actively avoided going into town because it would mean driving on the road.

Not only were the road's bus-sized potholes especially dangerous to negotiate during snowy or icy winter conditions, they were also so substantial that numerous locals credited them as the cause for hundreds of dollars in necessary car repairs. Worse, for the longest time, it seemed like no help was coming for the residents of Holiday Hills. After a failed millage and years of rebuffed tax proposals, many were starting to think that Holiday Road would continue disintegrating until there was nothing left.

Earlier this year, the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians came to the rescue with a generous grant donation, and with the help of Team Elmer's and the Grand Traverse County Road Commission, the road was re-designed, re-paved, and re-opened by mid-August.

The people of the Holiday Hills community were so grateful for the repairs that they decided to pay their appreciation forward to another homegrown entity in need of some help. 90 local residents pitched in to help raise over $5,000, which was given to the Mt. Holiday in the name of Team Elmer's and the Grand Traverse Band. The resort, which provides skiing, snowboarding, and tubing in the winter, disc golf in the spring and summer, and scenic views and quality walking paths all year round, is nestled at the top of Holiday Road.

Summer 2013: Highlights from Around the State

It might seem like you see Team Elmer's trucks everywhere you go. And, well, that's because we are everywhere! Here's a glimpse into just some of the projects we've been working on throughout the state this summer...

Cass Street Tunnel, Traverse City: In July, Team Elmer's assisted in renovating the entrance to the Cass Street Tunnel, leading to Traverse City's Clinch Park and to the newly-opened movie theater, the Bijou by the Bay!

Onekama Beach: A beach enthusiast watches Team Elmer's workers as we tested our brand-new beach groomer on Onekama Beach near Manistee. Onekama offers scenic shoreline views of both Portage Lake and Lake Michigan

Concrete Projects: The Team Elmer's concrete team had a busy schedule to meet throughout the month of June, pouring foundations for an M.J. Electric transmission line tower in Mesick, a cell tower in Casco, the Dollar General store in Gladwin, and even for the city of Traverse City! July was nearly as high-profile, with major projects involving the rehabilitation of a dam in Oscoda and the foundations for a new air hangar at Kalita Air.

Crystal Mountain Resort, Thompsonville: Our crews had to work hard not to be distracted by the gorgeous views provided by Crystal Mountain Resort and Spa. We laid concrete for the resort's newest chair lift towers, but made sure to spend plenty of time staring off into the distance.

City of Whittemore: Elmer's played a big role in the reconstruction of this eastern Michigan town, which needed a new storm sewer. We installed the system, repaved the roads, and supplied new concrete curbs, gutters, and sidewalks to Whittemore's downtown area.

Petoskey to Alanson Trail: After more than 20 years in planning and creation, the rail corridor winding in between Round Lake and Crooked Lake became a 7-foot-wide trail connecting the Little Traverse Wheelway to Alanson. Team Elmer's installed the trail, which creates an important corridor for commuters to use without having to worry about traffic.

M-88, Antrim County: Raise the roof? We rose the road! While resurfacing a five-mile stretch between Bellaire and Central Lake, we elevated one section of road a whopping seven feet. The project, which also included drainage and safety improvements, is slated for an October completion.

City of Traverse City Streets: This week, Team Elmer's is hitting the streets of Traverse City. Cass Street, between 8th and 14th, to be precise. Our crews are laying an ultra-thin overlay of hot mix asphalt. This application is considered interim maintenance and will reduce degradation of the roadway.

Enjoy the last few days of summer!
