Challenge: Age of water system, frost concerns
Solution: New water system for the town
Elk Rapids was ready for a new water main – the old cast iron material was about 75 years old – and with 18 miles of water main in the village of Elk Rapids, it was time to get started.
Team Elmer’s was the low bidder on the project to install 3.2 miles – that’s about 20% – of brand new water main, fire hydrants, and water services for commercial and residential properties. It was a big job, requiring excavation, detours, and reconstructing roads. All with careful planning and communication with the owners and public users.

The old water main was 4-inch cast iron, which was causing many problems for the residents of Elk Rapids. The water volume was very low. Water had an orange tint to it, making it unappealing for drinking from the tap. The pipes were not buried deep enough and at only five feet, the pipes were susceptible to breakage during the freezing winter months.
Now, the village of Elk Rapids has new 8-inch PVC water main and water services, which is providing a better volume of water and clean, safe drinking water for the village. The new fire hydrants also have a high volume, which is important for firefighters and public safety. The pipes are six feet deep, keeping them safer from the harsh elements of northern Michigan. Engineers designed a lower profile for the new system.
In addition to installation, Team Elmer’s restored roads and landscaping. During the segmented staging of the project, local traffic was maintained for owner access or rerouted as needed. A successful project for generations of use.
